Celco’s Restoring Network in Flood-hit Areas: PTA

The cellular services providers are making efforts to restore the telecommunication network in flood-hit areas, said a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority official in an interview withThe News.
The fibre optic cable network of PTCL and Wateen Telecom in Khyber Pakhtonkhwa (KP) was cut off severing link between numerous towns of the province, PTA said. Due to the deluge a total of 53 Base Stations Controllers (BSCs) and 2,703 Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been affected at Peshawar, Nowshera, Dir, Mardan, Charsada, Swabi, Jahangira, Swat, Bara, Timergara, Mingora, Bannu, Kohat, D. I. Khan, Kurram Agency and Khyber Agency.
Access in the affected areas was difficult but the service operators made utmost efforts to restore 43 BSCs and 2,239 BTSs. Remaining sites are being accessed by the technical teams and shall be restored as soon as possible.
Another official of a cellular company informed that telecom network on both banks of Indus River is yet to be fully restored. Flood, broken roads, and collapsed bridges are hindering the repairs. Ufone spokesperson Moazzam Ali Khan said Ufone has been able to keep 99 percent of network running throughout the country.
“Out of around 6,000 only 25 sites are down at the moment; most of the effected sites have already been restored,” Khan said.
“The floods have caused staggering damages to infrastructure in rural Punjab and KP,” said Telenor Head of Corporate Communication and Responsibility Affan Haider.
It was hard to keep the network going with no electricity and fuel, but most of the sites were restored within days, he said. “The scenario in Punjab and Sindh is much more fluid, with floods continuing to play havoc we are cautiously watching and maintaining our current network access and are geared to intervene in case of any issues,” Haider said. Warid spokesperson said that most of the infrastructure damaged due to floods in KP has been restored. The flood damaged the cellular services equipment, electric power system, generators and fuel tanks, boundary walls, floors and tower bases.
Warid attained redundancy via Wateen & Mobilink on few routes and planned long haul route redundancy in Southern Punjab, Sindh and KP.

Windows 8 Leaks – Microsoft’s Eye on Apple [Report]

So time now to share some interesting gossip about Microsoft’s upcoming operating system, “Windows 8″ that just got leaked on the Internet! The leaked documents reveal some of the sensitive and critical information which talk about Microsoft’s planning to lead the future of Operating System in the world.
And surprisingly, the leaked documents also show that Microsoft has been paying a closer attention to Apple Inc. As showed in the secret documents, Microsoft’s Officials have also discussed in a private meeting in April with the leading computer makers of the world, looking forward to offer a“Windows Store”, in the same way as Apple distributes it’s applications and softwares. A slide from the leaked document also reveals that Microsoft is also looking forward to give Windows 8 a more iPad-like innovation!
Microsoft’s main concern is the future design of Windows 8 as discussed in the slide,“Apple brand is known for high quality, uncomplicated, It just works”. Now that’s where Microsoft is planning to develop a “Windows 8 Prototype Machine”, this will completely redefine the traditional way of computing and will surely make Windows 8 more competitive in the Software World.
Windows 8 Prototype Machine
Windows 8 Prototype Machine will bring a revolution in the world of computing as it will be more powerful and will offer exciting new features which include, Face recognition-based login, Omni-directional Microphone, Infrared proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and High-quality touch Experience! What makes me more excited is the “Face recognition-based login”, that means Microsoft’s future Prototype Machine will have a built-in Cam that will log the user by facial recognition.
Other features include faster startup, and improved energy efficiency. More over this will also include a reset button that will reinstall the Windows and at the same time it will keep and maintain all your documents, media and other personal settings. So this means, you don’t need to worry about creating backups!
The Product Cycle for Windows 8
Below is the planning that Microsoft is looking forward to:
  • Planning (from Framing to Vision): Big picture thinking, themes then scenarios, and feature identification list.
  • Development (from Vision to Beta): Design and build features, refine SKUs (shelf-keeping units) and value propositions, and begin sharing code.
  • Readiness (from Beta to GA+90): Feature complete and bug-fixing, establish and track readiness metrics, and focus on creating great Dell + Windows experiences.
The Microsoft Journal Post, their official blog which is hosted on Windows Live Spaces, was completely taken down because of violating Microsoft’s terms of service. The action was taken as per request that came somewhere inside from Microsoft, now that gives a clear confirmation that these leaked documents are genuine. It was refused to confirm publicly but also has not denied the facts!
Now this gives a clear indication that Microsoft had no intention talking about Windows 8 anytime soon. But these leaked documents give a lot more sense of what exactly the Windows Team has been doing. And according to the timetable (as seen in the documents)Windows LiveWave 4 [in Beta] will go for the final release in this month [August] and the exciting Internet Explorer 9 [BETA] will also hit the markets this month!

Google: There Are 129,864,880 Books in the Entire World

How many books have ever been published in all of modern history? According to Google’s advanced algorithms, the answer is nearly 130 million books, or 129,864,880, to be exact.

We’ll admit it’s practically impossible to count every book that has ever been written, but in order for Google Books to successfully catalog the world’s supply of printed knowledge, the company needs an estimate of the amount of books it needs to scan. That’s why Google set out on the task to do just that.

In a detailed blog post, software engineer Leonid Taycher outlined just how complex counting books actually can become. The first step is defining exactly what a book is. The company decided to discount anything that wasn’t an idealized bound volume:

“One definition of a book we find helpful inside Google when handling book metadata is a ‘tome,’ an idealized bound volume. A tome can have millions of copies (e.g. a particular edition of Angels and Demons by Dan Brown) or can exist in just one or two copies (such as an obscure master’s thesis languishing in a university library).”

Google admits their definition is imperfect, but it’s workable and similar to what ISBNs are supposed to represent. ISBN, or International Standard Book Numbers, are designed to be unique identifiers for books. Because they’ve only been around for 30-40 years and are used in mostly Western countries, they can’t be used by themselves. That’s why Google took data from the Library of Congress, WorldCat and others to find as many books as possible — one billion raw records by the company’s count.

Here’s where Google’s engineering talent comes into play. The company used countless algorithms to determine and discard duplicates in an effort that required more than 150 pieces of metadata related to the world’s books to evaluate whether each book record was unique or a duplicate of another. Analyzing this data resulted in 210 million unique books.

Next, Google subtracted the millions of microforms, audio recordings, maps, t-shirts, turkey probles (yes, turkey probes) and videos with IBSNs, arriving at a much more reasonable number of 146 million. Finally, the company removed 16 million government document volumes from their estimate, getting to the 129.8 million count they announced today. Of course, publishers are issuing new books even as this post is being typed, so the company is constantly recalculating the book count.

While we don’t have an army of software engineers and algorithms to back us up, my gut says this number is too low and the company has many more books to count from the annals of history. Still, this project to figure out the world’s book supply is simply fascinating and could be useful for research and historical purposes for years to come.

Telenor Pakistan Pledges Rs100 Million for Flood Affectees

Telenor Pakistan has pledged Rs. 100 Million in funding and telecommunication services, towards relief and rehabilitation of flood affectees. The amount will be used to facilitate immediate relief efforts and longer term rehabilitation initiatives by Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
Chief Strategy Officer and VP Corporate Affairs, Telenor Pakistan, Aamir Ibrahim said, “In this hour of need, where millions have been affected by devastating floods across the country, Telenor Pakistan stands by its brethren. We will contribute through donating funds, offering our telecommunication services and volunteering our collective employee efforts towards the rehabilitation of the affectees. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction caused by recent floods. We are sure that this humble effort will help those who need it most.”
Secretary General, Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Brig. (Retd.) Muhammad Ilyas Khan appreciated Telenor Pakistan’s timely contribution. He said, “This is a great initiative from Telenor Pakistan and hopefully will also encourage other organizations to contribute in a similar manner. This is a national crisis and everyone needs to do their part by coming forward and extending support.”
Telenor Pakistan runs a number of community support initiatives aimed at helping communities help themselves. In addition to becoming a disability friendly organization, Telenor Pakistan also takes a lead in extending support to disaster victims. In wake of October 2008 earthquake in Baluchistan, it was the first telecom operator to reach the affected area that provided communication facilities and a month’s supply of food items to 160 families. Other than providing crisis communication support to Edhi, National Crisis Management Cell, press and relief organizations, Telenor Pakistan also made a contribution of Rs. 65 million to the President Earthquake Relief Fund and International Red Cross after the 2005 earthquake. Telenor Pakistan and PRCS also worked together during the IDP crisis to help thousands of displaced people from tribal areas of Pakistan.
