Anderson's five put England on top

Mohammad Asif's five wickets made the morning session Pakistan's but on a day for the bowlers, James Anderson cut through Pakistan to leave them eight runs adrift of the follow-on target with a wicket in hand. With the ball swinging prodigiously under leaden grey skies in Nottingham, 15 wickets fell for 170 runs throughout the day, and Anderson marked the occasion of his 28th birthday with 5 for 49.

Anderson made the initial incision by removing both openers before Steven Finn took a wrecking ball to Pakistan's middle order. Finn snatched 3 for 12 in his first spell as Pakistan went into freefall at 47 for 6 before Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Aamer's stubborn 58-run rearguard.

Anderson returned to snap their resistance, having both batsmen caught in the slips in successive overs to pick up his ninth five-wicket haul in Test cricket before Umar Gul's adventurous 30 took Pakistan to within touching distance of the 155 needed to make England bat again. As the gloom set in, however, the umpires decided that play could not continue despite the use of the stadium floodlights and the players were hauled off.

After Asif had sparked an England collapse in which six wickets fell for just 23 runs in the course of the morning, Pakistan's batsmen would have been expecting a spirited riposte from England's bowlers. They appeared completely unprepared for the scale of the assault.

Salman Butt was softened up by a clanging blow to the side of the helmet before he feathered an edge through to Matt Prior, and Anderson then came round the wicket to Imran Farhat after lunch, bending the ball past the batsman's attempted nudge to leg to shatter the stumps. Finn, fresh from his strength and conditioning training, extracted bounce and movement to pick up Umar Amin with a thick edge to second slip, which left Pakistan in the perilous position of 35 for 3.

The collapse was soon in full flow, and Anderson snatched his third as Ali was turned inside out by a booming outswinger to prompt an appeal for the catch behind. Umpire Tony Hill raised the finger but despite having UDRS referrals in the bank, Ali trudged off without questioning the decision. It was a strange decision, as replays appeared to show that the ball had missed the edge and touched the batsman's trouser pocket on the way through.

Finn then bullied both Akmals out in identical fashion, shaping the ball away from the bat with a touch of extra bounce outside off stump to draw indecisive prods to second slip. Malik and Aamer survived to see out his spell and briefly protect Pakistan's dangerously long tail with a partnership that was the second-highest of the match for either team so far, and it put the game-shaping importance of Eoin Morgan and Paul Collingwood's 219-run stand into proper perspective.

Malik's vigil was ended courtesy of a juggled catch by Andrew Strauss at first slip to give Anderson his fourth wicket, and his fifth came soon after as Aamer drove at a wide one to send a thick edge to Graeme Swann.

With Pakistan floundering at 108 for 8, Umar Gul took it upon himself to chase down the 47 still needed to avoid the follow-on with an attacking cameo. In gloomy conditions that had the umpires fiddling with their light-meters, Gul's innings was equal parts skill and luck. Fortuitous boundaries were picked up from leading edges and squirts through the slips before he got going with a stylish cover drive off Anderson.

He followed that up with a pull into the stands at midwicket before Broad pitched one up to beat Danish Kaneria's aimless drive and disturb the bails. Asif safely negotiated the final ball of Broad's over, but with that the umpires finally decided that conditions had deteriorated enough to send the players off.

Anderson's efforts, and the extent of Pakistan's batting capitulation, put the other five-wicket haul of the day - Asif's 5 for 77 - firmly in the shade, but England's collapse was, if anything, even more dramatic than Pakistan's. The home side had resumed on 331 for 4 but once Collingwood was removed for 82 in the sixth over of the morning the rest of the line-up quickly followed.

Asif bowled an unbroken spell from the Radcliffe Road end, trapping Collingwood with an inswinger to create an opening and give Pakistan the lift they so dearly needed, before pinging Morgan's back pad in front of off stump to reduce England to 344 for 6.

After Graeme Swann sold Matt Prior a dummy to see him run out for 6, England's tail fell in a heap, and Asif found himself on a hat-trick after nailing both Swann and Anderson in front of the stumps with deliveries that swung in unexpected directions. He found the edge of Finn's bat with the hat-trick delivery, but the chance fell well short of the slips.

Gul made a mess of Broad's stumps to bring the innings to a close in the very next over and complete a stunning collapse, but in the context of the game, one that was overshadowed by the Pakistani surrender that followed. If the low clouds continue to hover over Trent Bridge - and they are forecast to do so - Morgan and Collingwood's innings may well prove to be the decisive difference between the teams in this match.

Disastrous Flood in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

An emergency situation has developed in the country as the second spell of monsoon rains in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest of Pakistan, results in devastating flood in various rivers. Torrential rains, flash floods, lightning and collapsed houses killed nearly 150 people and left several thousands stranded and uprooted more than 100,000 people in last few days.

According to Mr. Qamar Zaman, Director General Meteorological Department Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province received between 250 mm and 300 mm of rain in the past 36 hours the highest figure recorded ever in the area in last 35 years and still expected to raise. Dozens of bridges, roads and houses have been washed away.

Footage on Duniya TV showed two elderly men in the Peshawar area, clinging to a fence post as a raging torrent swept over their heads. Dozens of people were still believed missing, so the overall death toll was expected to rise.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued Rs1 million emergency relief fund to 10 districts of the province, besides relief items earlier this week.

According to Reuters, Pakistan government says it will give out 1200 tents, 800 blankets and 2400 plastic mats. Government has deployed teams that can meet food and health needs for the next three months. But rescue and relief efforts are inadequate at this point of time. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar almost all the cellular networks and to some extent the PTCL landlines are not working.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar has appealed the federal and provincial governments to provide support for the people stranded in floods. There is a fear that Water-borne diseases would break out in affected areas. Rains have also caused waterways to swell in northern areas while flooding has been reported in some southern Punjab districts. The water level in the Nullah Lai has increased up to 21 feet alarming level causing fear of flood in Rawalpindi too.

The enduring rain and bad weather are also suspected factors in yesterday’s plane crash in Margalla hills that killed all 152 passengers and crew on board.

In Loving Memory Of Bilal Jamaee … Martyr of Air Blue Crash!

A superb orator, an awe-inspiring leader, a true jingoistic fellow left us mourning on 28 July, 2010.

Born on June 14, 1987 in Karachi, Bilal Jamaee was a very intelligent and a bright student. Currently he was a student for BS in Mass Communication at the University Of Karachi. At University of Karachi he served as the General Secretary of ‘Bazm-e-Adab’. Not only a good public speaker he was an equally terrific writer. He participated in numerous Debating Competitions and had written a number of stories for children’s magazines.

Bilal Jamaee worked for two years at Elite Publishers as Asst. Manager, where he was responsible for manufacturing products regarding printing and publishing. He applied for the Youth Parliament Pakistan 2009-2010. He successfully cleared written test and was short listed for interview. The interview panel saw a genius, a master mind and a whiz kid in Bilal Jamaee; hence he qualified for the Youth Parliament Pakistan 2009-2010. He was Youth Shadow Minister for Information. He was affiliated with Green party. Mr. Bilal Jamaee was part of the recent Youth Parliament Study Visit to UK that took place from July 5-9, 2010.

He often used to say, “Pakistan is a country of Greens but now, country wants some Red from Greens”. He was always thinking of bringing about some positive change in country’s political infrastructure. After his return from Youth Parliament Study Visit to UK he often used to refer to their democratic system.

Bilal Jamaee was eager to see Pakistani Youth actively participating in country’s political set up. He was against hierarchical politics.

He had left millions and millions of mourners behind him. Though we miss his physical presence but he would always live inside us.

Bilal Jamaee! You serve as a mentor and as a role model to be followed by Pakistan Youth. Your blood would not go in vain; we would take up your cause. You were not only a Guftar ka Ghazi but for sure he was a Kirdar ka Ghazi!

Most Indian Muslims can’t open bank accounts!

Muslims in India are treated worse than Dalits. They are widely perceived as being pro-Pakistani and supporters of self-determination for the people of Kashmir. So it’s not surprising to hear that Indian banks are denying banking facilities to most Indian Muslims.

According to The Hindu, Indian banks have designated those areas where Muslims are in the majority as “red zones”, and these localities are not provided banking facilities. Muslim students who have won scholarships and live in the red zones find they cannot open bank accounts.

It seems that Muslims are more discriminated against in India than blacks in the U.S. This is the real face of Indian democracy

Asif takes five as England collapse

Eoin Morgan had four Tests against Pakistan to prove he should be on the plane to Australia. He's booked a ticket in one innings after his maiden Test century carried England to 331 for 4 on the opening day at Trent Bridge. Morgan finished on 125 alongside Paul Collingwood on 81 as the fifth-wicket pair added 213 after Mohammad Aamer's three wickets left England struggling on 118 for 4

Other than Aamer's continued excellence Pakistan's cricket was shambolic less than a week after ending their 15-year drought against Australia. The support bowling lacked control with Danish Kaneria's struggles creating a major headache for Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal had another nightmare behind the stumps. During the first session he dropped a regulation edge from Andrew Strauss and with the game being taken away from them during the final session he couldn't complete a simple stumping when Collingwood charged Kaneria.

Morgan, though, was breathtaking. He raised his hundred (just his seventh in first-class cricket) from 151 balls with a signature straight six off Kaneria - to rubber-stamp an individual battle he won hands down - and it was an innings that answered a lot of questions about technique and temperament.

The fact he did it from a position where England were in some trouble after Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott departed in four balls after lunch added further weight to the innings. Neither did he change his game from what has brought him one-day success; he used his feet to the spinners, drove inside-out through cover and even unfurled the reverse sweep.

There were a couple of nervous moments. Early in the innings he edged Aamer to Akmal but although the keeper claimed the catch - perhaps just in the sheer joy of thinking he'd caught one - replays soon showed it had grazed the turf. When he'd reached 78 he was given lbw to Kaneria but was saved by the UDRS when replays showed the ball would have spun past leg stump. Two of the next three deliveries were driven effortlessly through the covers.

Ironically, had Pakistan not used up their two reviews early in the day they could have referred a lbw appeal against Morgan on 34 when he swept at Shoaib Malik and the ball was hitting flush on leg stump. Both Pakistan's reviews were taken during Pietersen's painful 29-ball innings as the visitors twice challenged not-out decisions. Mohammad Asif was the bowler on both occasions, firstly with an lbw appeal which replays showed was only clipping the bails then when he thought Pietersen had edged to the wicketkeeper but the noise, expertly noticed by Asoka de Silva, had been bat clipping pad.

Pietersen, though, never settled and looked woefully short of form in his first innings for nearly a month and there was no doubt about his eventual dismissal when Asif nipped a ball back which took the inside edge into the stumps. It was another wonderful piece of bowling from an intelligent operator.

England's problems were compounded in the next over when Trott, who had been reprieved by the UDRS when he had 13 after being given lbw to Kaneria despite an inside edge, padded up to an inswinger from Aamer and this time Trott's request for a review couldn't save him.

While Morgan entered needing to prove himself in a tricky situation, Collingwood has made his name in such positions and was quite happy to play second fiddle as his young partner sped away. However, he never passed up a scoring opportunity such as consecutive long hops from the struggling Umar Gul that were cut through the covers after Pakistan had kept England's scoring rate to less than two-an-over for an hour after lunch. By the end of the day the hosts were racing and the stand was England's first over 200 since Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara added 213 against West Indies, at Chester-le-Street, last May.

Strauss had also looked in good form during the morning session although had a huge stroke of luck when Akmal added another awful drop to a sizeable collection of keeping horrors. Akmal had been tidy during the recent series against Australia but he remains an unconvincing gloveman. Aamer did manage to break the opening stand when he squared up Cook and Imran Farhat at first slip showed his keeper how to take a catch.

Already, though, it was becoming clear that the onus was on Aamer to do the damage himself and when his opening six-over spell ended life became much easier for Strauss and Trott. But 10 minutes before lunch Aamer was recalled for his second burst and with his fourth ball he found Strauss's top edge as the England captain's eyes lit up at a hint of width. Pakistan might have thought they'd shifted the key left hander in the nick of time, but then along came Morgan to stamp his name on Test cricket.

After Monica & Dimpy, Rahul Mahajan gets back to chasing Payal Rohatgi again

Rahul Mahajan is known for his fickle-mindedness and flirtatious ways which was all too public in ‘Big Boss 2’ where he two-timed with Payal Rohatgi and Monica Bedi. Now, his just a few months old marriage is bearing the brunt as Mahajan has gone back to chasing his ex-flame Payal Rohatgi with incessant messages at odd hours.

It may be mentioned here that Rahul’s relationship with Payal was marred with his open flirt with Monica Bedi in the house of Big Boss, so much so that Payal even vacated the apartment Rahul had once gifted her.

Where Rahul seems to be longing for a second chance, Payal is utterly furious at his attitude and has openly come out with her anger.

Confirming the news, Payal said, “What Rahul is doing by calling and sending me messages is very irritating. I am done with him. I don’t live in the past.” Payal also revealed that Rahul had previously offered to pay her Rs 1 crore just to be one of the contestants of his nation wide ‘Swayamvar’.

“The most difficult period was when I was housed in Bigg Boss 2. I realised his true colours there,” said Payal adding that she has no feelings left for Rahul now.

“Please! He is a married man and I am not in touch with him. We used to be friends but that was a long time ago. He also offered to pay me Rs 1 crore to be a part of it. You see, he wanted a friend around. But I was used enough in ‘Bigg Boss 2’ to know better,” she said.

Mallika Sherawat: ‘Is this too much?’

Well!! Bold and sexy Mallika Sherawat has gone a step bolder for the promotion of her forthcoming flick ‘Hissss’ directed by Hollywood’s Jennifer Lynch, and co-starring Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta.

The voluptuous babe has posted her topless photo on the popular social networking site covering her assets with bare hands and flowing tresses. She gives out a sultry look with kohl painted eyes and arms covered in scaly snake design.

The pic is accompanied with tweets from Sherawat like, “…my “topless pic shud giv eternal life…” and “is this too much?”

After Sherlyn Chopra and Mallika Sherawat, ‘Twitter’ seems to be the final destination for our desi babes shedding their inhibitions…

Kunal Khemu and Soha Ali Khan - The open secret opens up officially

Kunal Khemu and Soha Ali Khan’s love affair had always been an open secret. Thoguh the couple never denied their linkup, they never officially admitted it. However, recently the duo felt that there was no point in denying a known fact anymore and so, the two came out candid on their relationship when they were spotted together during the Delhi Couture Week.

Explaining why they chose to open up their affair now, Khemu said that they were not hiding their relationship earlier on either. “It just didn’t make sense to talk about it until we were sure of our feelings. When people were speculating about our relationship we were just hanging out together. We did two films together but we weren’t in a relationship then.”

“Now we’re sure of one another. We’re both private persons. Relationships are complicated. They need space to grow. In any case, I am not the kind to wear my heart on my sleeve,” he added.

Kunal admits to have met Soha’s family twice. He says, “I was in Delhi, so I met them. I’m a big fan of both Sharmila Tagoreji and Pataudi Saab. They represent the pinnacle of the two religions of our country: cinema and cricket.” Not to be left out, Soha has also met Kunal’s parents. “She comes home for dinner sometimes. I told them about Soha. And they left it at that.”

However, he stresses on the fact that marriage is not on their cards right now. “I am not saying no to marriage. But I don’t know about the future. I don’t plan beyond the next two days. I didn’t plan my career. At the moment, I’ve signed no new films.

It’s very important for an actor to be associated with films that will get completed and released. Recently, recession had put a lot of actors out of work. It’s better to be honest about our work.

Both Soha and I need to focus on our careers. I got to do Zakhm when I was a child. I don’t know if I’d ever get a role like that again.”

Soha, too, candidly admitted her relationship and said, “I am seeing a wonderful actor called Kunal Khemu. And he is lovely. It’s not a secret, but it’s not something that I am going around announcing either. You know, we both are young and both are in films, both are exploring films, and we enjoy spending time together. I feel life is incomplete without having someone to share it with. Your happiness is doubled and your sadness, halved, when you share it with someone. It really helps in both situations - happy and sad.”

Wonder if brother Saif Ali Khan going gaga over his relationship with Bebo gave some boost and kick to Soha to get candid about her affair too!!!

From ‘Poke Me’ To ‘Ask Me’ – Facebook Adds A New Feature

A recent post from the Facebook blog revealed a lot of plans which clearly states one thing and that is- Facebook is the No.1 Social Networking Platform with 500+ Million Users and is under some serious expansion mode. We have heard stories about facebook wanting to expand in the Location Based Market as well which is a no brainer if it comes to such a huge and active population. Coming back to the post, Facebook has come up with Facebook Questions, a beta product that lets you pose questions to the Facebook community. Yes, to the whole Facebook world across the globe. Sounds interesting right?

How does it Work?

Facebook Questions will aid in to ask a question to more than 500 million people on Facebook. For example, if you are exploring a new place and want to know more about it, besides Google, facebook will be your best bet to put up any question. The question will appear to your friends and their friends, for which you’ll receive answers that are more personalized to you.

What More than asking?

After you ask a question you have the option of adding a poll or a photo/link to better describe the whole purpose. If you want to do s survey regarding a study that you are doing, polls would be an option you definitely don’t want to miss out on for getting cumulative results.

Also a big but expected add on is where you can add tags to your question. So in case you have questions regarding buying a new car, tagging it will better help you to get the precise answers. In essence the questions you ask will be shown to people who have expressed interest in the particular topics you have tagged in, as well as to your friends and friends of friends.

Although other features like Rating the Answers, Related Questions, Related Topics have also been incorporated to clone a QnA website.

Who will be hurt the most?

From what we know, yahoo answers (90 Million Users) and rediff qna (50 Million Unique Users) that have the highest population of unique users will be hurt Big Time as they will have to compete with a 500 Million+ Giant that has many things besides what they have on offer. Also Facebook is storming into the QnA market rather openly to keep the current players weary of the whole trend and overtake them in no time.

What is lacking?

The real Location Based QnA feature is still missing as one cannot ask people things on the basis of location. For e.g. if someone is at a park and wants to explore things around, the best thing one could do is Ask a Question on Facebook Questions which could act as a Real Time Guide

All in all We feel that the whole idea of Asking Questions to friends and others has been already revolutionized by many QnA websites but with a massive and active population of 500 Millions users, Facebook is posied to stay at the No.1 position in the world.

Facebook Exposed: Personal Details Of 100 million At Stake?

The privacy of Facebook users was violated when personal details of its 100 million users of were available for download after they were published by an online security agent.

Ron Bowles, who works for Skull Security, used a code to scan Facebook profiles. He then compiled a list of data not hidden by users’ privacy settings. This list is now available as a 2.8 GB downloadable file and contains personal information such as e-mail addresses and phone numbers as well as the URL of every “searchable” Facebook user’s profile, their name and unique ID. Within an hour of its release, the list had reportedly been distributed and downloaded by more than 1000 users.Ron said he wanted to expose the frailties in Facebook’s privacy settings.

But Facebook vehemently denied any breach of its privacy security. It claimed that this information was already available online and no private data has been compromised. It further added that this information is already available on Facebook Online directory so as to aid users in finding their friends.

However the fact remains that Privacy is a huge concern for thousands of Facebook users and earlier this year there was a storm of protest over the complexity of its privacy settings. This impelled the social networking site to simplify the controls that let users set how much of their personal information is visible to other users. In the process, many security analyst fear, Facebook may have compromised on its privacy security settings.

A tricky situation for the users

Only last week, the social networking giant registered 500 million users and this means that the file contains information for every 1 out of 5 Facebook users. Now the users find themselves in a predicament: if they remove themselves from the Facebook online directory, they may not be found by new people on the site and if they choose to leave the setting unchanged then their private information might not be private anymore. What would you choose?

Beware The Shocking Video Bug Sucking Up On Facebook Users!

I know I have badly mutated the nursery rhyme but that is exactly what the story is about Facebook. Today there is another scam spreading through your social inboxes and growing on clicks from the careless people out there. As always, all we can say is that users need to be aware of any message that talks about A Shocking Video. The Message is as follows:

"I am Shocked!!!! I am NEVER texting AGAIN since I found this out. Video here: http://bit.ly/xyza – Worldwide Scandal"

If you fall prey and click the link you will be taken to a malicious Facebook app which would then require you to fill in multiple survey forms before you are to be shown the life saving video. That’s just one of the many and there has been another similar case of a viral shocking video of a teacher that has been taped as she killed a boy. What ever the case be just avoid clicking on anything suspicious, especially my dear click happy friends.

In case you do fall prey the best thing to do is identify the malicious app and remove it from your Facebook Account.

England bat first on overcast morning

England's batsmen will get an early taste of Pakistan's in-form bowling attack after Andrew Strauss won the toss at Trent Bridge and decided to bat first. It is an overcast morning but the pitch is dry and expected to take turn as the match progresses.

Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain, said he would also have batted first but he won't be overly disappointed to be able to unleash his new-ball attack straight away. They are high on confidence after the performance against Australia, at Headingley, where they skittled Ricky Ponting's team for 88 on the opening day.

Trent Bridge has a history of encouraging swing bowling so Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif should be a handful for England's top order. Both sides line-up as expected with Pakistan unchanged from the Leeds Test and England leaving Tim Bresnan, a late replacement for the injured Ajmal Shahzad, out of the starting line up.

While England's batting order is deep there are a number of players under pressure. Kevin Pietersen needs a good series after a lean time this season while Eoin Morgan is aiming to prove he should be the reserve batsman on the plane to Australia. Talk of the Ashes will never be far away over the next four weeks, but this series has the ingredients to be a compelling contest in its own right.

England 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn

Pakistan 1 Salman Butt (capt), 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Umar Amin, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Mohammad Aamer, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Danish Kaneria, 11 Mohammad Asif

Aamer and Asif are best in the world - Butt

Salman Butt, the Pakistan captain, has praised his new-ball pair, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, as the best opening duo the world ahead of the Test series against England following their performances which earned a 1-1 draw with Australia.

Although Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, South Africa's quick bowlers, can lay their own claim to be the leading strike force in the game, Pakistan's combination have certainly made a huge impression in recent weeks and will be a major threat when they take on England at Trent Bridge. Asif and Aamer shared 22 wickets in the two-Test series against Australia and were both outstanding during Pakistan's three-wicket victory at Headingley, their first win against Australia for 15 years.

Aamer has gained praise from former great fast bowlers including Wasim Akram, while Asif has shown tremendous skill in controlling the swing even though he has lost pace in recent years. They have enjoyed bowling in overcast conditions, but are also capable of extracting reverse swing which could play a part against England.

"The way Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul bowled was brilliant," Butt told Cricinfo. "Without any doubt I can say that Aamer and Asif are the best pair in the world at the moment and Gul with the old ball is the most dangerous because he bowls the best reverse swing that I've played in recent times. I am a lucky person to have such an armoury and they are Pakistan's trump card in Pakistan's successes in the recent past and for a long time in the future."

However, one of the key challenges facing Pakistan is to ensure their pace bowlers remain fit during a demanding schedule which will extend to six Test in six weeks once the England series concludes at the end of August. Although they have reserves in the squad, if either Asif or Aamer are unable to play a match it will have a severe impact on Pakistan's chances.

"We will be talking to the bowlers. We have to look after each other," Butt said. "But if somebody is feeling tired, disheartened, or if he feels there is any injury scare he can always come out and speak to me and the seniors. It is not only me, but the seniors and the team management who will sit and decide. It is not only this series but with the World Cup fast approaching we definitely have that, too, at the back of our minds so we will preserve key people but at the same time in the big games - Tests - we need to play our best team and plan accordingly."

Pakistan's bowlers are without doubt their most dangerous asset because the batting remains hugely inexperienced with much resting on Butt himself. Umar Akmal's performances against Australia suggested he has yet to realise the requirements of Test cricket, but Azhar Ali showed promise at No. 3 with a vital 51 during the tense run chase at Headingley.

"He is a wonderful prospect," Butt said. "He plays his cricket in his limits. He knows his shots, his scoring areas. In the four innings so far, three times he got out a very good ball which any good batsman might have found hard to negotiate as well. Azhar is a very good talent and if he can carry on this way he has the ability to stabilise the Pakistan batting. He proved that during the fourth innings at Headingley where he showed great temperament and resolve against the Aussies as well as a good technique in tough conditions.

"But you should not forget Imran Farhat's contribution," Butt added. "He kept the scoring rate high and kept hitting the boundaries at the other end, which helped Azhar to not take pressure. So, full credit to Imran, who built the crucial partnership with Azhar in the run chase."

Tendulkar and Raina keep India afloat

Sachin Tendulkar led India's attempt to stay alive in the series on an attritional day at the SSC, battling his way, supported by VVS Laxman and Suresh Raina, to a determined century that took India closer to avoiding the follow-on. This, after Sri Lanka's spinners brought the Test back to life just when it seemed the bat would dominate for the third successive day.

The conditions on Day 3 were still batsman-friendly but the Sri Lankan bowlers varied their pace and lengths with greater skill than their Indian counterparts to create chances. However, India survived a couple of nervy moments that helped turn the third day, if only slightly, in their favour. When on 29, Tendulkar attempted to upper-cut Dilhara Fernando and was dropped by wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene. And an appeal against Raina was turned down in the final session when he was struck on the pads by a straighter delivery from Tillakaratne Dilshan; replays suggested the ball would have gone on to hit leg.

Charged, yet again, with the responsibility of reviving the Indian innings, Tendulkar batted with assuredness amid the pressure. The spinners didn't extract much turn though they did generate good bounce, but Tendulkar adapted well, opting to deal with the length deliveries outside off with caution while treating the ones that were pitched short harshly. He struck Suraj Randiv for eight boundaries through the off side - point, cover and past slip - and comfortably picked off deliveries bowled on his pads for a couple more. The one time he did step out to the spinners was when he brought up his half-century, a clean strike over long-on.

Tendulkar played the ball late on a slowish track, and targeted Randiv while approaching his century, reaching the landmark, his 48th in Tests, with a sweep through square leg. He also ensured a steady flow of singles with Raina, whose strokeplay masked the nerves of a batsman making his first Test appearance.

Raina was uncertain early on against the round-the-wicket line bowled by the two spinners, failing to pick a legspinner from Mendis and leaving a straighter one from Randiv. But, unlike Tendulkar, it was against the length deliveries that he was most comfortable. He stepped out to both spinners to drive them through mid-on, and struck Dammika Prasad for consecutive boundaries. He was equally solid in defence, offering the full face, and eased towards his maiden half-century with a couple of delicious cover drives off the spinners.

Tendulkar began India's recovery after Virender Sehwag's swipe on 99 triggered a rush of wickets that undermined a strong start. Facing Randiv's first delivery of the day, Sehwag stepped out and swung hard towards cow corner, missed and was stumped to become the offspinner's maiden Test victim.

The wickets that followed were a consequence of some crafty bowling from the spinning pair. Mendis snared opener M Vijay with a googly that he failed to pick after erroneously opting to play the length delivery off the back foot. Rahul Dravid was trapped in front with a ball that skidded on before Laxman joined Tendulkar to rebuild the innings.

Laxman was edgy during his stay and was troubled by Randiv as he played inside the line while expecting more turn. He got the leading edge twice and edged one to slip on the bounce. He appeared far more comfortable against Mendis, capitalising with a couple of boundaries when he was generous enough to stray on the pads. But his concentration wavered and he didn't read Mendis' wrong 'un and was struck in front of leg stump. His wicket at the stroke of tea shifted a see-saw day Sri Lanka's way, but Tendulkar and Raina, with a bit of fortune, put India's survival plans back on track.
